The Side of John Mann
.

John Mann's side brought up points of how slaves can be put to death, and how there were many slave codes that allowed their masters to punish them, but the difference is that John Mann didn't own the slave, so he should be punished accordingly for that action. He was completely liable for the damage that was done to Lydia. This was conflicting however, because as stated in the case, John Mann was renting the slave, so he was technically considered the owner of her at the time.
The State defense brought up the Fugitive Slave act, allowing people to detain and imprison slaves, along with any accomplices who know of runaway slaves to face a serious penalty, so it backed up John Mann's actions when the slave attempted to run, and the Missouri Compromise, dividing the free states and the slave states an established guidelines for each of the slave states, so this encouraged that John Mann was in his full right to do what he did and should be given back his 10 dollars
